UVU Presidential Search: New Process Unveiled After Astrid Tuminez's Resignation (2026)

A bold new chapter awaits Utah Valley University (UVU) as the search for its next president unfolds, but this time, it's not just about finding a replacement for the esteemed Astrid Tuminez. It's about embracing a fresh approach to leadership transitions in higher education.

On the very day President Tuminez announced her resignation, effective May 1st, the Utah Board of Higher Education unveiled a groundbreaking new procedure for hiring college presidents across the state. And UVU is set to be the first public school in Utah to implement this innovative model.

But here's where it gets intriguing: a formal presidential transition team, comprising representatives from the state board, UVU's board of trustees, and the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education, will be assembled. This team aims to sustain UVU's positive trajectory and ensure a smooth leadership transition.

Amanda Covington, chair of the Utah Board of Higher Education, emphasized the board's responsibility to facilitate strong and well-supported leadership changes. She believes transition teams are a best practice in higher education, designed to preserve momentum during periods of change.

Scott Smith, chair of UVU's board of trustees, highlighted the importance of maintaining the incredible momentum built by the university's last two presidents, Matt Holland and Astrid Tuminez. Under their leadership, UVU experienced remarkable growth, expanding from 26,000 students to nearly 49,000, with a diverse range of degrees and programs, and an endowment that more than doubled.

And this is the part most people miss: the transition team system is not just about finding a new president. It's about supporting continuity and assessing UVU's priorities and immediate needs during the search process. One key feature is that the presidential transition team will remain in place for the first six months of the new president's tenure, providing additional leadership support to both the president and the university.

The State Board of Higher Education will now appoint and publicly announce the UVU Presidential Search Committee, with further details to be released in the coming weeks.
