Taliban Crackdown: Afghan Men Face Consequences for Peaky Blinders-Inspired Outfits (2026)

The Taliban's recent actions have sparked a debate about cultural expression and religious values. In a surprising turn of events, four young Afghan men found themselves in hot water with the Taliban's morality police for donning outfits inspired by the popular TV series Peaky Blinders.

These friends, all in their early twenties, were summoned to the Taliban's department of vice and virtue, accused of dressing in a manner that conflicted with Afghan and Islamic traditions. The Taliban spokesman emphasized that the values portrayed in Peaky Blinders were at odds with Afghan culture.

In online videos, the men, now released, are seen sporting flat caps and three-piece suits reminiscent of the series' English post-World War I setting. This incident is just one example of the many restrictions the Taliban has imposed on daily life since seizing power in 2021, all in the name of their interpretation of Islamic Sharia law.

Saiful Islam Khyber, a spokesman for the Taliban's provincial department of vice and virtue in Herat city, explained, "Even jeans would have been acceptable, but the series' values are not aligned with our culture."

The men, from the town of Jibrail in Herat province, were ordered to appear before the Taliban's morality police on Sunday. They presented themselves for questioning the following day in Herat.

Khyber wrote on social media, "They were promoting foreign culture and imitating film actors in Herat." He added that the men had undergone a rehabilitation program.

While they were not formally arrested, Khyber clarified to CBS News, an affiliate of the BBC, that the men were "only summoned, advised, and released."

Khyber further emphasized, "We have our own religious and cultural values, especially when it comes to clothing. We have specific traditional styles. The outfits they wore lacked any Afghan identity and did not align with our culture. Moreover, their actions were an imitation of British movie actors. Our society is Muslim, and we should follow our righteous religious predecessors in matters of good and lawfulness."

In a video released by the ministry after the men's questioning, they can be seen thanking the officials for their advice and admitting their ignorance of any legal violations. One man stated, "I innocently shared content that went against Sharia, and it gained many views."

He added that he had been "summoned and advised" and promised not to repeat such actions.

In a November interview with the YouTube channel Herat-Mic, before their summons, the friends expressed their admiration for the fashion in Peaky Blinders, noting that locals had positively reacted to their style.

"At first, we were hesitant, but once we went outside, people liked our style, stopped us on the streets, and wanted to take photos with us," one of the men said, as translated by CBS News.

This incident raises questions about the balance between cultural expression and religious adherence. What do you think? Should there be limits to cultural influence, especially when it comes to religious societies? Share your thoughts in the comments!
