Bold headline: Shakespeare’s Othello arrives at Norwich Cathedral this summer, and it’s ready to shock, move, and captivate you. And yes, this is the part most people miss—the open-air Cloister setting adds a haunting immediacy you have to experience firsthand.
A Shakespearean tragedy takes center stage in the heart of Norwich this summer.
Othello will be performed in the Cloister at Norwich Cathedral on July 3 and 4, as part of the annual open-air Shakespeare Festival.
The Dean of Norwich, Very Revd Dr Andrew Braddock, expressed enthusiasm: “We look forward to welcoming The Lord Chamberlain’s Men back to Norwich Cathedral’s Cloister for this year’s Shakespeare Festival. The Lord Chamberlain’s Men always deliver an incredible show, and we cannot wait to see what this summer’s production of Othello has in store.”
The production is described as a powerful exploration of deception, jealousy, and misplaced trust—one of Shakespeare’s most gripping and tragic tales.
The Lord Chamberlain’s Men will stage Othello in traditional style: an all-male cast, Elizabethan costumes, and live music to heighten the mood.
Tickets cost £24 plus a booking fee and can be purchased via the Norwich Cathedral website at www.cathedral.org.uk/shakespeare.
This marks the company’s 22nd anniversary in 2026, following a sold-out run of Twelfth Night at the Cathedral last year.
Artistic director Peter Stickney, a Saxlingham Nethergate native, shared his pride: “Bringing our performances to the magnificent surroundings of Norwich Cathedral is always a highlight of the tour for me. This year’s show is a true rollercoaster—twists and turns abound, and it’s compelling, horrifying, and utterly electric. It’s a sensational story you won’t want to miss.”
Note: This will be the first time the company has performed Othello.
Showtimes begin at 7pm, with doors opening at 6pm. Viewers are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the venue and refreshments, available from Bread Source.
