NSW authorities are taking no chances with student safety, implementing school zone speed limits a week ahead of schedule. This proactive measure is a timely reminder for motorists to adjust their driving habits as students prepare to return to classrooms after the holiday season.
From January 27, drivers must adhere to a 40km/h speed limit, a significant reduction from the usual pace. This temporary slowdown is a crucial safety measure, especially as some students may return to school earlier than expected, following an extended six-week break.
But here's where it gets tricky: the enforcement period begins before the official start of term one on February 2. This means drivers must be extra vigilant during this transitional phase, as the usual school zone hours of 8-9:30am and 2:30-4pm may see an early influx of students.
And the consequences of speeding in these zones are severe. Motorists caught exceeding the limit face hefty fines of up to $3242 and seven demerit points. NSW Transport executive director Chadi Chalhou emphasized the importance of compliance, stating that police and speed cameras will enforce these limits.
Chalhou's message to drivers is clear: "Children's behavior can be unpredictable, so motorists must be vigilant." He urges drivers to slow down and be aware of school children to prevent road incidents. The goal is to keep students safe and drivers' licenses and wallets intact.
