Virgin Music Group Elevates Nicole Thomas to South Africa Managing Director
Virgin Music Group has promoted Nicole Thomas to the role of managing director for South Africa, extending her prior position as co-country manager. The move comes as the company continues to grow its regional partnerships and expand its slate of artists.
“Nicole has steered our South African operations with a clear focus and high energy, delivering measurable impact for our labels in the region,” said JT Myers, co-CEO of Virgin Music Group. “Her vast network of relationships within both the artist community and the broader business ecosystem makes her the ideal leader to drive our ongoing expansion in South Africa.”
Thomas commented, “I’m grateful to JT Myers and Nat Pastor for entrusting me with the opportunity to lead our South Africa team as we broaden collaboration with the country’s music entrepreneurs to nurture innovative artists in the region.”
Michael Roe, managing director of Virgin Music Group Africa, the Middle East, and Asia (AMEA), added, “Nicole’s expertise and extensive connections will remain central to our success as we continue to work closely with our label partners in the region. Under her leadership, Virgin has enjoyed a notably successful period over the past two years.”
Virgin’s roster features award-winning artists such as Dlala Thukzin and Lwah Ndlunkulu, who have claimed South African Music Awards, as well as the a cappella group Just 6, which earned a 2024 Grammy nomination for its rendition of Angels We Have Heard on High. Dlala Thukzin was also nominated for Best International Act at the 2025 BET Awards.
The company has also signed Zimbabwe’s top acts Saintfloew and Freeman HKD, alongside newcomer Naledi Aphiwe, who won Best African Pop Song at this year’s Metro FM Awards with Romeo & Juliet.
Thomas’s deep ties within the artist and business communities position her to lead Virgin’s continued growth in South Africa, Myers noted.
Virgin Music Group has also collaborated with other high-profile talents, including Ndlovu Youth Choir, finalists from America’s Got Talent Season 14, who released a reimagined isiZulu version of Bohemian Rhapsody supported by Queen and the Freddie Mercury Foundation. The release drew coverage from BBC News, The Times, and NPR.
Virgin has supported advocates of South Africa’s emerging Lekompo scene, backing artists such as Shandesh, Kharishma, Janesh, and Mvzzle. In South Africa, Virgin Music has extended its longtime partnership with Gallo Record Company, and this collaboration includes Content Connect Africa, an independent media and content business that partners with major telecom networks.
Thomas joined Virgin via Electromode, an independent distributor, where she held the position of general manager. Her prior experience includes studio management at CSR Studios, overseeing client relations, marketing and promotions, business development, and operations.
In addition to Thomas’s promotion, Virgin Music South Africa announced several internal upgrades:
- Gareth Wilson was promoted to general manager
- Nicola Chadwick was promoted to head of business affairs and royalties
- Hlompho Motana was promoted to senior business development manager
- Waide Lemos was promoted to head of label operations
