Milton Keynes Radio Station Cleared by Ofcom After Swear Word Loop Incident (2026)

Imagine tuning into your favorite local radio station only to be greeted by a relentless loop of profanities—for nearly half an hour. That’s exactly what happened to listeners of Horizon Radio in Milton Keynes on October 9, leaving many shocked and outraged. But here’s where it gets controversial: despite the offensive content, the station has been cleared of any wrongdoing by Ofcom, the UK’s broadcasting regulator. How did this happen, and why did it take so long to stop? Let’s dive in.

The incident occurred during the station’s evening show, which aired at 18:00 BST—a time when, as Ofcom noted, children were particularly likely to be listening. Horizon Radio’s program was unexpectedly 'hijacked' before reaching the transmitter, resulting in a stream of expletives being broadcast instead of the planned content. The station’s managing director, who heard the broadcast while driving, immediately sprang into action, attempting to halt the transmission. However, it took nearly 20 minutes of repeated requests to the transmission provider before the correct service was restored at 18:50 BST.

And this is the part most people miss: Horizon Radio wasn’t directly at fault. According to Ofcom’s report, the station’s web stream and DAB transmission were managed by third-party providers. Horizon Radio claims the stream provider’s service was 'hijacked' due to a contractual dispute with another DAB multiplex provider, replacing their scheduled content with a string of obscenities. Interestingly, the station’s website and app were unaffected, as they used a different stream.

Horizon Radio didn’t just sit back and wait for the storm to pass. They actively tried to stop the broadcast multiple times and even issued a heartfelt apology within the hour: 'Earlier today, you may have heard some language broadcast which may have caused offence. This was caused by circumstances outside our control, and we are very sorry for any offence this may have caused.' Ofcom acknowledged these efforts, concluding that the station did 'everything in its control to minimise the impact of this incident.'

Since then, Horizon Radio has taken steps to prevent future mishaps. Their technical manager now oversees all streaming output, and they’ve cut ties with third-party stream providers entirely. But here’s the question that lingers: Should radio stations be held accountable for technical failures caused by third-party providers, or is it fair to absolve them when they act swiftly to rectify the issue? Let us know your thoughts in the comments—this is a debate worth having.
