A Personal Journey: Unlocking the Power of Data to End Cancer
Cancer: A Battle No One Should Fight Alone
As a kidney cancer caregiver, I've witnessed firsthand the challenges patients face, especially when they feel alone in a sea of medical jargon and complex processes. But here's where it gets controversial: can technology and data science be the key to making this journey less daunting?
The Tech-Forward Approach to Personalized Care
At Meta, I grapple with the delicate balance of providing personalized experiences to billions of users. A similar challenge exists in healthcare, where making patients feel seen and understood is crucial. This is where the Institute for Data Science in Oncology (IDSO) steps in.
With my background in technology and as a member of MD Anderson's Board of Visitors, I've seen the potential of IDSO. It's not just about medical data; it's about understanding the entire patient experience, from the speed of initial responses to the emotional impact of interactions with care teams. And when it comes to personalized treatment, genomic and clinical history data become vital.
Training AI to Benefit Cancer Patients
By training AI to analyze MD Anderson's vast data, we can gain insights that benefit patients throughout their cancer journey. IDSO, launched just two years ago, holds the promise of significant advancements in cancer care.
Comfort in the Face of Intimidation
Receiving a cancer diagnosis is incredibly intimidating, and navigating a large hospital system can be overwhelming. I know this from personal experience with my late husband, Philip Guentert, who was diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer in 2012.
Phil, a powerful litigator, often struggled to find words when discussing his cancer. He'd sit quietly, absorbing information but unable to ask the questions he had. The emotional toll was evident, and it's a challenge many patients face, especially when alone or facing language or other barriers.
How do we make this process less daunting? How do we use technology to empower patients to help themselves, while also providing support when needed? These are the questions MD Anderson is tackling with data and technology.
Using Data to Enhance the Patient Experience
MD Anderson is utilizing technology to reduce wait times and improve appointment convenience, a crucial aspect of the patient experience. We're also employing AI to analyze surgical processes, identifying areas for improvement to reduce anesthesia time and enhance patient comfort.
Making Research Accessible
As chair of IDSO's signature priority committee, I educate others about IDSO's work, making it more appealing to a wider donor community. By showcasing IDSO's initiatives, we can engage people who may not be familiar with MD Anderson or data science. This creates a cycle where supporters become ambassadors, leading to more funding for future projects.
Currently, IDSO is working on two exciting projects where donors can participate at their comfort level. The first involves using AI to predict and potentially prevent intraoperative hypotension, a dangerous drop in blood pressure during surgery. The second project aims to measure tumor volume and activity, potentially guiding treatment decisions earlier, with the help of digital twins.
Maximizing the Potential of Data
AI and big data are here to stay, and their potential is vast. By showcasing MD Anderson's unique capabilities, we can engage a broader audience and create a future where cancer is a battle patients can win.
I believe IDSO is a critical part of MD Anderson's mission to end cancer. It's our future, and with your support, we can get there.
Consider making a donation to IDSO and be a part of this transformative journey towards a cancer-free world.
