Japan's weather agency has issued a critical warning, urging residents to prepare for a potential megaquake along an 800-mile coastline. This advisory follows a 7.5-magnitude tremor that injured at least 34 people and triggered tsunami warnings. The warning covers approximately 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) from Chiba to Hokkaido, stretching Japan's northeastern coast. The prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, emphasized the importance of individual preparedness, stating, 'Please take appropriate disaster-prevention measures based on the principle that you are responsible for protecting your own life.' The advisory is in place until December 16, and officials are urging people to stay calm, continue daily routines, and review evacuation plans. The risk of additional quakes and tsunamis is highest immediately after the initial major quake and gradually decreases over time. Despite the potential danger, the likelihood of a major quake occurring after the advisory is issued is only about one percent, according to the agency. The advisory is officially called the 'Off the Coast of Hokkaido and Sanriku Subsequent Earthquake Advisory.' The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has explained that the 2011 magnitude 9.0 quake, which devastated large swaths of Japan's northern coast, occurred two days after a magnitude 7.3 temblor at the Japan Trench. The agency has also noted that megaquakes can be unpredictable and can strike anywhere in Japan without warning. Residents are advised to have packed emergency bags, secure furniture, sleep in day clothes, and coordinate plans with family members for quick evacuation. The aftermath of the earthquake included fires, with at least 10 people injured and 800 homes without electricity. The Shinkansen bullet trains and some local lines were also suspended, but power was mostly restored by Tuesday morning. The incident has raised concerns about travel safety, as the weather agency warned of potential aftershocks and the possibility of another large-scale earthquake.
