Two years ago, before Not This Time's rise to fame, his yearling colts were already fetching an average of $319,108. So, how did Desormeaux manage to get such a steal?
Fast forward to the present, and Giocoso, now a three-year-old, has proven his worth. On November 22nd, at Churchill Downs, he became a millionaire, defeating Chapman's Peak by a head in the $299,800 Commonwealth Turf Stakes (G3T). This victory, his fourth in 13 races, showcased his talent and the wisdom of Desormeaux's decision.
"He's a smart one, always giving his all. You can't help but love a horse like that," Desormeaux gushed about his trainee.
And this is the part most people miss: Giocoso's journey to the winner's circle was not a straightforward one. Starting from the back of the pack, he patiently waited for the right moment. Jockey Jose Ortiz's strategy paid off, as he unleashed Giocoso in the stretch run, and the colt responded with a burst of speed, leaving his rivals in the dust.
"I gave him his head gradually, and at the quarter pole, I knew I had a powerhouse under me," Ortiz explained.
With splits of :23.15, :47.66, and 1:11.67, Giocoso covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.47 on a firm turf course, despite recent rain. Outrunner held on for third, while the favorite, Troubleshooting, struggled and finished a disappointing ninth.
In 2025, Giocoso has been consistent, with a record of 2-1-1 in seven races. His earlier victory in the $500,000 Secretariat Stakes (G2T) was a highlight, followed by strong performances in the Gun Runner Stakes and Bryan Station Stakes.
Desormeaux plans to give Giocoso a well-deserved break before gearing up for a 2026 campaign. "I want that Grade 1 on turf, and if we can add a graded stakes on dirt, his sire value will skyrocket," he said ambitiously.
Bred in Kentucky, Giocoso is one of the successful offspring of Not This Time's winning mare, Nutcracker Suite. He's part of an impressive group of three-year-olds, including graded stakes winners Troubleshooting, Magnitude, Disco Time, and Dream On. Not This Time's stud fee for 2026 is set at a whopping $250,000, reflecting his rising popularity.
