In a whirlwind of events, Sandfall Interactive's Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 emerged as the Game of the Year, capturing the attention of the gaming world. But this triumph was short-lived, as a controversial decision by The Indie Game Awards shook the industry.
Within a week, Expedition 33 secured back-to-back wins at The Game Awards and The Indie Game Awards, an unprecedented achievement. However, just days later, The Indie Game Awards revoked its accolades, citing concerns over the developer's use of AI.
"The Indie Game Awards maintains a strict policy against the use of gen AI throughout its process," the official statement read. "Sandfall Interactive had assured us that no gen AI was involved in the development. However, their recent confirmation of AI usage led to the disqualification of Expedition 33."

Despite the controversy, Expedition 33's popularity remained strong. President Emmanuel Macron of France even congratulated Sandfall on its Game Awards success. The awards and a timely DLC release propelled the game to new heights on Steam and consoles.
