An Inspiring Story of Age and Athleticism: Unveiling the Woodball Bronze Medalist
Age is just a number, and this 75-year-old athlete proves it! Tan Kok Tiong, a woodball player, has made history by becoming one of Singapore's oldest SEA Games medalists. But here's where it gets interesting: this was his very first SEA Games appearance!
Tan, along with his teammates, Chan Hock Hooi, Cheng Hua Ju, Len Meng Jin, Neo Hock Leng, and Ng Yeow Gim, secured a joint-bronze medal in the men's team fairway event. Despite a 0-3 loss to Malaysia, their achievement is remarkable. Woodball, a relatively new sport at the SEA Games, has only four participating countries: Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. This marks the first time woodball has been featured at this biennial event.
Invented in Taiwan in 1990, woodball is an outdoor sport that requires players to use a wooden mallet to navigate a ball through a series of small gates. It's a sport that has found a thriving community in Singapore, with most players being seniors. Clubs across the country provide a platform for these athletes to showcase their skills.
All six members of the men's team are in their 60s and 70s, a testament to the sport's appeal among older generations. On the women's team, five out of six players are over 60, with the youngest being 17-year-old Gwenifer Mak, a student at ITE College Central. The women's team also secured joint-bronze after a 0-3 loss to Thailand.
Tan, the oldest athlete in the Singapore contingent, has set a new benchmark for senior athletes. However, he is not the oldest Singaporean to have won a SEA Games medal. At the 2011 Games, bridge player Ng Lai Chun, then 76, won two silver medals, proving that age is no barrier to success.
